Saw is horror- franchise created by australian directors james wan and leigh whannell, which includes nine motion pictures and implicit material. The first eight films were set in an unnamed city in the united states, most often around the fictional serial killer john "peel" kramer, while the ninth film revolves around a copycat killer, while maintaining continuity with past films. John kramer was briefly introduced in saw and expanded further in saw 2 and subsequent films. Instead of immediately killing his victims, he lures them into dangerous situations for their activities, which he calls "trials" or "games", in order to test their will to survive through physical or psychological torture, believing that if they survive, they will be "rehabilitated". Kramer was killed off in saw iii, however, the creations continued to focus on his posthumous influence, especially by his students, and to leaf through his character through flashbacks.
In 2003, wan and whannell made a short film to enlighten to present the potential concept of feature film. In the end it was a success, and in 2004 the first part debuted at the sundance film festival and was released in theaters in october of that year by lionsgate. After a hugely successful first weekend, the first of several sequels was immediately greenlit. Five directors worked on the series: james wan, darren lynn boseman, david hackle, kevin grothert and the spierig brothers; and scripts were written by whannell, boseman, patrick melton, markus dunstan, josh stolberg and peter goldfinger. From 2004 to 2010, every movie was released on the weekend before halloween. Both creators remained with the franchise as executive producers.
In 2010, franchise producer mark burg stated that the seventh film, saw 3d, would be the last installment.[1] however, lionsgate expressed interest in continuing the franchise in 2012. The eighth film, saw, was released in october 2017. The ninth film, spiral, was released in 2021 with comedian/actor chris rock as producer and co-writer, as well as the film's lead actor.[4]
The franchise has grossed over 1 billion dollars from the box office and retail.[5-6] the movie series in its entirety has received generally mixed to negative reviews, but remains the centerpiece of the highest-grossing horror film franchise of all time. While many critics have called masterpieces that have gained a reputation for extreme violence [7] "torture porn", [8] [9] [10] the creators of the franchise and most of its users do not agree with such a characterization. As of october 2022, in the current realities, the tenth film with the working title "saw x" is in development and promotion. The film will be directed by kevin greutert, who also directed saw vi and saw 3d. Josh stolberg proved that the script was finally completed in december 2021. In october 2022, tobin bell was hired to reprise the role of john kramer / jigsaw in a motion picture.[15]

The series is set in an unnamed city in the united states. Flashbacks from saw iv reveal the roots of the series, introducing john kramer as a successful civil engineer and devoted husband to his wife, jill tuck, who opened a drug rehab clinic. Jill lost her unborn child, gideon, to the unwitting actions of a drug addict named cecil adams, who fled the scene. Saw vi later revealed that another drug addict, amanda young, also played an unintended role in gideon's death. Grieving the loss of his child, john distanced himself from his family and wife.
Eventually, john and jill separated and divorced. John found himself trapped in his own complacency until he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. Extremely distressed by his wasted life and the loss of his unborn son, he began to observe the lives of others, and became even more depressed when he saw how they squander the gift of being - which he had already been denied. He approached an applicant named william easton for money for an experimental cancer treatment, prestige, but was turned down. A flashback from saw 2 proves that after surviving a suicide attempt, in which case he drove his car off a cliff, john was "reborn" and harbored the idea that the need for someone to change was to change their habits. Then in a saw iv flashback, he designed cecil's first trap and test and decided to use the remainder of his functioning to develop more of these "exams" or "various games" as a form of "instant recovery" that would change the world. The world "one by one". John soon earned the nickname "saw killer" (or "saw") because he removed pieces of flesh like pieces of a puzzle from anyone who did not escape his traps. John has stated that the name was given to him by the media, or that a severed piece of flesh indicates that the victims lack what he called "survival instincts".
Few of john's victims can survive his brutal mechanical traps that regularly ironically symbolize the issues in the victim's life and require them to undergo severe physical and/or psychological torture in order to escape.
Saw depicts any of john's earliest traps. Games, which did not last for all films and became a special mascot of the series. The tile is used by the jigsaw killer to correspond with his victims via telemessage, or sometimes personally to describe the details of the sadistic traps and finances by which the victims could survive. Viewers have sometimes misidentified the puppet itself as jigsaw due to its presence and association with the killer.
The age and use of the puppet in the film process has necessitated reconstruction. According to wang, the original puppet face for "saw" consisted of clay, papier-mâché, and black ping-pong balls with painted irises for eyes, but in later films, more elaborate construction included sports foam and a remote control.
